The Institute of Physics Belgrade

The Institute of Physics in Belgrade, as an institution of national importance for the Republic of Serbia, is a leading scientific research center for physics and related fields. The Institute conducts research on the fundamental mechanisms of nature, which are of priority significance for the scientific, educational, cultural, and overall socio-economic development of the Republic of Serbia.

Founded in 1961, the Institute of Physics emerged as a result of the intensive development of physics in post-war Yugoslavia. As the need became increasingly evident to unify non-nuclear physics research within a single institution, the Institute of Physics was established at the initiative of the esteemed professor Aleksandar Milojević.

Built on continuous questioning, human connections, openness to ideas, and the encouragement of personal growth, the Institute has endured years of development, periods of challenges, and moments of significant discoveries. By fostering a network of collaborators, the Institute has initiated, strengthened, and supported numerous positive initiatives in Serbia and the region.

As the first institution in Serbia to receive the status of an institute of national importance, the Institute of Physics today serves as a hub of scientific excellence, promoting openness to technological ideas and innovation in education.

The Institute maintains close ties with leading scientific institutions in Serbia, as well as across Europe and the world. One of its most significant partnerships is with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). In addition to CERN, key strategic partners include the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) in Italy and DESY, Germany’s largest scientific research facility.

Thanks to its unique spirit, cutting-edge research, and applicable innovations, the Institute is today recognized in Serbia as a leading national research institution, in the region as a center of excellence, and internationally as a reliable partner and a relevant research center.
