Did you know that Tara National Park is home of the unique and one of the most diverse flora and fauna in Europe and is a place with one of the most magnificent viewpoints?
Come and join us on the road to one, as per visitor choice, the most breathtaking one. The viewpoint Banjska stena is located 10 kilometers from Mitrovac. The road to the viewpoint is marked, with benches at the top of it and elevated at 1,065m above sea level, offers an unforgettable view of the artificial lake Perućac and the Drina canyon.
The name Banjska stena comes from Banjsko spring, which is a spring at the foot of the viewpoint. It is one of the most popular and most beautiful viewpoints of Serbia. Situated several km from Mitrovac, you can reach it by using one of the two marked hiking trails if you are a true hiking lover. The spring was of karst origin with water temperature of 4 degrees Celsius. Banja (Turkish for spa, resort) denotes a place with warm water. The citizens of Tara used this water even during the winter because it was always warm. Banjsko spring was flooded in the construction of the Perućac lake.
Under the viewpoint there is Banjsko dispensers, a scree that was used in the 19th century for the transport of wood. Timbers were transported down the river by making rafts out of them which floated down Drina to Belgrade. Banjsko dispensers is 1300 meters long and today it is covered by herbs, some of them very rare plants, characteristic of screes.
From the viewpoint there is a wonderful view over the lake Perućac, Drina canyon, Osata area in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Perućac lake is an artificial lake 52 km long, and it was made by damming of Drina in 1966, for the construction of hydroelectric plant Bajina Bašta.
National Park Tara is home of the most numerous populations of Brown Bears in Serbia. It is possible to see bears on a special tour organized by National Park, where you will be watching brown bears from a specially designed and safe observation hides at feeding grounds. Today, the lake is one of the biggest attractions of these parts. Here you can enjoy boat riding, swimming, sports fishing...
Visit Banjska Stena from May to September, during Serbia’s warmer months. Winter can get quite foggy and you risk missing out on those spectacular views that Banjska rock is worth visiting for.
