International Sports Day for Development and Peace

On August 23, 2013, the General Assembly of the United Nations, with the support of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), launched an initiative to establish the celebration of the "International Day of Sport for Development and Peace".

The idea behind the celebration of this day is to celebrate the positive impact of sport on social change, as if to start the development of the community and to encourage mutual respect and understanding, in a word, to encourage peace. The chosen date represents the holding of the first Olympic Games of the modern era, held in Athens in 1896.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) fully supports this initiative. The IOC is in the role of a permanent observer at the United Nations, valuing its potential. The celebration of the "International Day of Sport for Development and Peace" is an opportunity for athletes to use their influence in public to achieve and promote tolerance and solidarity among sports participants, fans, and people in general around the world
