Ovčar-Kablar Gorge

Hello everyone. I am glad that you managed to join us on another trip through our beautiful Serbia. Our next stop is Ovčar-Kablar Gorge, a very special piece of nature in many different ways. This Gorge, surrounded by a vivid nature is a natural habitat for many rare, and protected animal species, and a great place for people to relax and to connect with nature.

Ovčar-Kablar Gorge is placed in the West Serbia, 17km from Čačak city. Western Morava, by breaking through the massifs of Ovčara and Kablar, cut a unique gorge, which in year 2000 was protected as a landscape of exceptional features "Ovčar-Kablar gorge".

West Morava is slowing down its flow due to the collision with the cliffs of Ovčara and Kablar, thus building three unique meanders. The gorge is a geomorphological phenomenon of unique natural values, determined by its special character, geomorphological and monumental values, present flora and fauna, as well as the attractiveness of the landscape. This attractive landscape is a unique museum of nature with a special combination of flora and fauna.

While walking through the beautiful nature of Ovčar-Kablar gorge, you can tumble into animal species of international significance, such as otter or European wild cat. You can see colorful salamander, badger or golden eagle, and peregrine falcon. Ovčar-Kablar gorge, due to the presence of a large number of bird species, has been singled out as an internationally important area for birds - IBA area (Important Bird Areas) and is located within the EMERALD network.

Nature, sports, and recreation enthusiasts can enjoy both by the riverside and in the mountains. There are well-marked hiking and biking trails that lead to one of the most beautiful lookouts in Serbia, at the top of Kablar.

There are 10 monasteries and two holy places at the slopes of Ovčar-Kablar gorge and on the banks of the Morava. They originated from the 14th to the 16th century when they served as a refuge and shelter for the persecuted and places where Serbian spirituality and literacy were preserved during the Ottoman occupation. On the left bank of the Morava you can find the monasteries Blagoveštenje, Ilinje, Jovanje, Nikolje, Uspenje, the church dedicated to Saint Sava and the church of the Kadjenica cave. On the right bank of the river you can find the following monasteries Vavedenje, Vaznesenje, Preobraženje, manastir Svete Trojice i Sretenje. Because of the importance of the holy places located at the gorge, Ovčar-Kablar is often called Serbian Mounth Athos.
